While much of the West has responded to the AI boom by scaling up data centre capacity to meet growing hyperscaler computing demand, APAC has taken a somewhat different approach. Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asian countries have been seeking to strengthen their industrial and manufacturing capabilities to reinforce their positions as chokepoints in the wider semiconductor supply chain. With each country seeking to strengthen its position, interlinkages among countries are intensifying, creating a domino effect and broader supply chain risk. Here, we map out the various roles that APAC plays in the semiconductor supply chain, and the datasets investors can use to track potential slowdowns or accelerations within it.
