The tariff ruling

This month marked a major US Supreme Court Decision, opening a host of complicated legal cases that will likely impact data demand. On 20th February 2026, the Court ruled that President Trump overstepped his executive office bounds by enacting a wide range of tariffs over the past year. The 6-3 decision found that Trump’s reliance on the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify the implementation of tariffs was unconstitutional. The court found that the Act did not give Trump the power to impose tariffs, as it did not specifically grant the “extraordinary power” to do so.
