Welcome to the (slightly belated) December edition of Neudata Tidbits for data providers.

In this edition, we address how privacy concerns are shaping how vendors collect data, discuss ways of ensuring compliant datasets and highlight our popular people moves section.

From everyone at Neudata, we wish you a happy new year and look forward to helping you reach more data buyers in 2021.

PRIVACY MATTERS
In 2020, data privacy became a hot topic for consumers, who began to realise the extent to which companies track their personal information, and for investment managers, who started to realise the regulatory and headline risk of using those datasets.

This month, several news stories in the privacy space piqued our interest. Vice News reported on how US government agencies are buying app-derived location data, while The Wall Street Journal broke the news that Apple and Google are beginning to ban certain apps from their app store for their data collection processes. There’s also some evidence that stronger privacy measures can benefit data collectors — according to a study on messaging app trends, apps with stronger privacy features — such as encryption — have stronger user bases.

Neudata believes this theme will continue throughout 2021 and expects that vendors who can ensure de-identification of sensitive data (or can pivot to collecting less sensitive data) will be more successful when selling to investment managers. Please let us know if you’ve changed anything about your data collection methodology this year to ensure less sensitive data is being collected.

ENSURING DATASET COMPLIANCE
In a similar vein, we released our first Neudata Sentry Intelligence report for data providers this month, which provided vendors with an introduction to the buy-side compliance process. Our view is that providers need to consider compliance issues during the product development phase — more data users are telling us that shoddy compliance (or the perception of such) is a main factor in eliminating a dataset from consideration.

In the report, we outline a few key first steps, like filling out Neudata’s Due Diligence Questionnaire before pitching and offer tips on how to provide clear, concise answers on complicated topics.
